Endobronchial Valve Placement (Zephyr)
Endobronchial valve placement using the Zephyr® system is an innovative, minimally invasive treatment for patients with severe emphysema. By strategically blocking airflow to the most diseased lung regions, these one-way valves reduce hyperinflation and improve breathing mechanics. The procedure is performed bronchoscopically under sedation, without the need for external incisions.
Patient selection is critical: detailed imaging (high-resolution CT scan) and pulmonary function testing identify candidates who will benefit most. Once valves are placed, follow-up imaging and lung function tests assess valve position and therapeutic response. Most patients notice improved exercise tolerance and reduced dyspnea within weeks.
Complications are uncommon but may include pneumothorax, valve migration, or minor respiratory infections. Your care team provides comprehensive monitoring and management plans to address any issues early. Rehabilitation programs complement valve therapy by strengthening respiratory muscles and optimizing lung function.
By targeting diseased lung segments, the Zephyr® valve system can significantly enhance quality of life for patients whose symptoms have not responded adequately to medical therapy alone.
