Pleurx Catheter Placement
A Pleurx catheter is a small, soft, tunneled drainage catheter placed into the pleural space to manage recurrent pleural effusions, most often caused by malignancy or heart failure. It allows patients to drain fluid safely at home, reducing the need for repeated hospital visits.
The catheter is placed by our pulmonary specialists in a short, outpatient procedure using local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance. After placement, our team — together with a visiting nurse when needed — trains patients and caregivers on proper drainage technique and catheter care.
Pleurx catheters significantly improve breathing, comfort, and quality of life for patients with chronic effusions, and can often be removed once the effusion resolves.
