Home & In-Lab Sleep Testing

Home and in-lab sleep testing serve as the gold standard for diagnosing sleep disorders, particularly OSA. Home sleep testing allows you to sleep in your familiar environment using a portable monitoring device that records airflow, respiratory effort, and oxygen saturation. This convenient option is ideal for patients with a high pre-test probability of moderate to severe OSA and who have no significant comorbidities.

In-lab sleep studies (polysomnography) are conducted in a specialized sleep center under the supervision of a technologist. This comprehensive test measures brain waves (EEG), eye movements, muscle activity, heart rate, respiratory effort, airflow, and blood oxygen levels. It's the preferred method when more complex sleep disorders—such as central sleep apnea, REM behavior disorder, or periodic limb movement disorder—are suspected.

Both testing modalities yield detailed reports that quantify the number of apneas (breathing pauses) and hypopneas (shallow breaths) per hour, known as the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). These metrics guide the diagnostic classification and severity assessment of OSA. Results are then reviewed in a follow-up consultation, where treatment options and next steps are discussed.

By accurately identifying sleep breathing abnormalities, these tests pave the way for targeted interventions that can dramatically improve daytime alertness, cardiovascular health, and overall well-being.
